Have you ever heard that song, 'Kentucky Rain' by Elvis Presley? I heard it the other day while I was in line for the ATM, and it got me thinking ...

Seven lonely days
And a dozen towns ago
I reached out one night
And you were gone
Don't know why you'd run,
What you're running to or from
All I know is I want to bring you home

So I'm walking in the rain,
Thumbing for a ride
On this lonely Kentucky backroad
I've loved you much too long
And my love's too strong
To let you go, never knowing
What went wrong

Kentucky rain keeps pouring down
And up ahead's another town
That I'll go walking through
With the rain in my shoes,
Searching for you
In the cold Kentucky rain,
In the cold Kentucky rain

At first, I was thinking, "What a sad and romantic song ...".

Then I realized that what passed for romance in 1970 would probably be considered to be stalking today.

It's not like they were seperated through some sort of tragedy or misunderstanding. She waited for him to go to sleep, and took off! This woman does not want to be with him ... maybe because he has no car and has to hitchhike all over Kentucky. We don't know why she'd run, what she'd running to, or from. All we know is:

Elvis - she's just not that into you.

There is poor Elvis, walking in the cold Kentucky rain, thumbing for a ride, showing her photo to "some old grey bearded men outside the General Store", and when he finally finds this woman, she is going to say one of two things:
  1. ARGH!!! Help! Police!!!
  2. What are you doing here? Can't you take a hint? It is so over.

(And don't even get me started on "Don't Cry Daddy"! That would be the day when any child's mother would die and they would tell their father not to cry because, "Together we'll find a brand new mommy". Shake it off, Dad! Little Tommy and I are totally over what's-her-name!)
