Another for the category of "Why do people say the things they say?" ...

This weekend, a friend left an answering machine message for me that began this way:

"Oh! Hi, Karen! This is ____."

Why sound surprised? She called me!

I often get messages that go "Oh! Hi, it's ___, [pause] your brother" or "Hi Teri, it's your sister, ___, calling". Is all that information necessary, particularly when you can recognize the voice?

Anyway, Oh! Karen? Hi! It's Teri, your friend!

My mom does that to me when we are actually talking. She always begins that conversation by saying, "Hi, Karen. It's Mom". I think I've figured out who it is after 28 years.

After telling her many times that this was uneccessary, I decided to be facitious, but it didn't work very well:

"Hi, Karen. It's Mom".

"Dad???"

(louder)"No, it's MOM, Karen".

"Grandma???"

(shouting) "NO - IT'S MOM!!!"

"Hi, Mom."

"Could you not hear me? I think there might be a problem with your phone".

Now I always reply, "Hi, Mom. It's Karen", which Mom thinks is a very cute little "thing" we do.
