A record setting blizzard hit Saskatchewan this week. There were 90 kilometre per hour winds and 25 centimetres of snow. It was the worst blizzard to strike Saskatoon in 50 years, and the most snow that Saskatoon has ever received on January 10th.

"Git inside, Ma! Storm's a comin'!!!"

I drove to church for Bible study at 10 AM Wednesday morning, partially because I'm "hardcore", partially because I'm crazy, and partially due to my brother's encouragement that "I don't think it's as bad as it looks". I made the short drive without much trouble only to find an extremely surprised Pastor George telling me it had been cancelled. I headed next for Preston Crossing to do an errand, but I quickly changed my mind and turned back when I encountered white-out conditions.

Despite Mark's suggestion that I should stay at home for the remainder of the day, I braved the roads again to get to my job, telling him, "In my line of work, you can't just say, 'I'm not coming'!". I arrived safely ... to receive calls from nearly all of my co-workers telling me that they would not be coming.

All but one of our residents made it home, the fact it was allowance day probably being a big factor, and I forbid them to leave again because the buses were stopping at 6 PM. I spent the evening in a big old house with four other staff, eight toddlers, two newborns babies and ten teenage girls.

"Too many residents and no co-workers make Karen ... something, something."
The girls refused to take me up on my suggestion that, "We'll all play hide-and-go-seek. I'll be 'it', but if I don't find you by 10:30 PM, just go to bed", but it was still a good evening with only one notable disagreement. At midnight I drove home on the newly plowed streets in less time than it took me to shovel out my parking spot.

The Star Phoenix encouraged people to submit their blizzard stories, but in my opinion, the prize for the best blizzard story goes to my friend and co-worker Shannon, who delivered a 10 pound 7 ounce baby boy at 11:26 PM January 10, 2007!!!

So tell me ...
Where were you during the KILLER STORM OF '07?

I left for work at 1:00 PM. I take the bus, and they had to make a detour on Cumberland because Preston Avenue was snowed in. While I was riding, I heard that the buses were going to shut down at 6:00 PM. I arrived at work, but there was hardly anyone there. I heard that they had already shut down the buses at 2:30 PM, so I asked if anyone was willing to give me a ride home. The Human Resources Manager said that her husband drove her to work, so they can give me a ride. Management decided that they would close early because the storm was getting worse and they wanted everyone to get home safely. I found out that the buses would still be running until 6 PM, but the Human Resources manager said that one of the cashiers who lives near my place was having her son drive her home because her car won't start, and that I should go with her. We waited an hour, then she phoned him. He was still downtown. She decided to try to start her car again. It started, and both of us headed to my place. The traffic wasn't that bad, and I got home safely at 4:45 PM. I saw that my sister's car wasn't there, I was worried that she got stuck in a snow bank or she had gone to get me. I called her workplace and got the answering machine. Then I called her cell, and she didn't pick up, so I just hoped that she was okay. I tried again at 6 PM and found out she was fine. It turned out that she and her boss were only people there, because everyone else didn't show up. She told me that she was busy at work, so not to worry. Around that time, my mom who lives in North Battleford called to see if I was okay. She is a teacher and had stayed home from work that day because there were no classes and the highway was closed. She was also worried about my sister and told me she was going to call her at work. She was also going to call my Grandma to see if she was okay. A few hours later, my sister called me to say that she doesn't know what time she is coming home because she is really busy and no one else might come to work at midnight. She also asked me to tell my mom not to call or to worry about when she was coming home, because she is not sure, and mom was calling her work to tell her to stay there. She came home safe and sound shortly after midnight.
